Dodo
Dodo was my contribution to architectural art at the then-new IT Centre of Bern University. It was my first venture into using picture code as a design material. At various places in the centre, one unexpectedly comes across aluminium panels with rather blurry and heavily pixellated images alongside bars of colour and text fragments. From a certain distance, they can be seen to represent animals. They are farm animals that I assumed would be examined and treated at a veterinary hospital – which is what the centre used to be.
Their pixelation reveals that these images had at some point been digitised into a sequence of signs – numerals and letters – that define values of colour and brightness of individual pixels in an image file.
I overwrote some of these signs, replacing them with the names of wild animals, of which I had found out that they had become extinct at approximately the same time that the building was used as an animal hospital. Next, I reopened the file as an image, revealing the bars of colour, which are a visualisation of the names of those extinct animals.

Dodo war ein Beitrag für ein Kunst am Bau Projekt, dem Informatikzentrum in Bern. Hier habe ich zum ers- ten Mal mit dem Bildcode als gestalterischem Material gearbeitet. An verschiedenen Orten trifft man unvermutet auf Alu-Tafeln mit eher unscharfen und recht grob gepixelten Bildern und daneben auf Textfragmente und Farbbalken. Mit etwas räumlicher Distanz lassen sie sich als Tierdarstellungen erkennen. Es sind Nutztiere abgebildet, von denen ich annahm, sie würden gewöhnlich in einem Tierspital – also zu früherer Zeit auf eben diesem Areal – untersucht und behandelt.
Die Bilder verraten durch ihre Auflösung in Pixel, dass sie irgendwann als digitales Datenmaterial vorlagen, also als eine Folge von Zahlen und Buchstaben, die in der Bilddatei die Farb- und Helligkeitswerte der einzelnen Pixel definiert.
Einige dieser Zeichen habe ich überschrieben und an ihre Stelle die Namen von Wildtieren gesetzt, von denen ich in Erfahrung bringen konnte, dass sie etwa zu der Zeit ausstarben, in der das Gebäude als Tierspital diente. Sodann habe ich die Datei wieder als Bild geöffnet und erhielt die farbigen Balken, die nun eine Visualisierung der Tiernamen darstellen.
